Craniosacral Therapy

Our bodies are supported by an interwoven system of connective tissues.  Restriction or adhesions develop in the connective tissues as a protective response to trauma, injury and repetitive strains and postures.  The CranioSacral rhythm is a fluid, wave-like pulse, not unlike respiration, which is understood to be created by the movement of the cerebrospinal fluid within the central nervous system.  As the wave of movement travels out along the web of connective tissue it can be palpated anywhere on the body.  However, where there is a restriction in the connective tissue, the cranial rhythm will be altered.  Thus, changes in the cranial rhythm become the guide for the therapist’s assessment and treatment.

The therapist uses gentle contact to ‘read’ the tissue and assist the releasing process, engaging the interface of the nervous system and the musculoskeletal system.  An essential component of the treatment is listening for the stillpoint;  that precise spot where the repetitive strain pattern in the tissue becomes quiet and the system enters a deep state of relaxation.

Cranial therapy specializes in specific techniques which address the bones of the skull and is also effective for other joints and connective tissues throughout the body.  While muscles are not directly ‘worked’ with this technique, relief of associated muscle tension naturally results.  Craniosacral therapy is easily incorporated into massage therapy sessions.

Due to its subtlety, craniosacral therapy is indicated in cases of recent injury as a pain-free way of working with inflamed and fragile tissues.  It is also effective for old injuries and scar tissue, repetitive strain syndromes, headaches and TMJ dysfunction.

Each person’s experience is unique, but some common observations are heat at the site of release and spontaneous muscle twitching as shift occurs within the nervous system.  Many clients report a profound, meditative state of relaxation during sessions, making it an excellent therapy for stress.
